Q & A with Kasper Nyman

Q: Where did your inspiration for the Mono chair come from?
A: “My main inspiration for the Mono chair was actually the innovative UPM Grada material. I wanted to design a concept, which made use of the new material features. The wooden grain reacts to the overlapping construction of the seat and it kind of lures you in to have a closer look at the detail. The mono chair is my interpretation of the new possibilities the material gives us, the overlapping construction of the seat would simply not be possible with conventional laminating techniques. ”

Q: Can you tell a bit about the material, UPM Grada, used for the Mono chair?
A: “From a design and production perspective, UPM Grada is a sustainable plywood material with some fascinating qualities, one of them being that instead of regular glue, the wood pieces are joined together with an adhesive film that reacts to heat, making the material formable.”

Q: Where do you find inspiration in general?
A: “I find my inspiration in things that radiate originality and shows a clear function. Sometimes inspiration also comes from a material, like here with the Mono chair.”

Q: Which design or designer do you admire?
A: “From current designers id have to say Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien for the originality, Stefan Diez for everything he makes.

Q: What made you decide to work with WOUD?
A: “I love the enthusiasm the people behind WOUD show for the brand and the fact that I was able to be involved from the very start of the company, was very appealing.”
